The Story behind "Morning Comes"

As many of my pieces are, this work is an illustration, and that means there is a story behind what I've drawn. "Morning Comes" is based on an unpublished literary work and done on a private commission basis.

The young man pictured is the son of an abuser, who has hurt him both emotionally and physically. In this illustration he is recovering from a serious back injury which left him bedridden for weeks, and standing for one of the first times since the incident.

But this piece is not about pain or despair, but rather about healing. The sun is just coming up behind the mountains, the light is shining through the window and the crystal bowl, and the wisteria is blooming. It's a quiet morning over the river, and the young man is picking flowers from outside his window. After all that has happened - all the pain, all the humiliation, all the abuse, he's made it. The sun is still rising and the world is beautiful. No matter what terrible things happen during the darkness of night, always remember morning comes.
